Augmented Reality C-arm Fluoroscopy

The rationale for the project is based on the following points: (1) the use of standard C-arm fluoroscopes is correlated with excessive radiation exposure to both surgeon and patient; and (2) the use of 3D navigation systems undergoes low usage rates by surgeons due to high costs, lack of adequate training, equipment problems and disruption of surgical workflow. The overall goal of the research is to perform for the first time a thorough comparison of the benefits and constraints of an Augmented Reality C-arm device 3D navigation systems, and analysing outcomes for patient interventions and surgeon safety using a surgical workflow oriented approach. Expected outcomes using this innovative technology would include: reduction of radiation exposure, and cost-effectiveness while ensuring patient outcomes.
